Methot Staying in Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators announced on Monday that defenseman Marc Methot is staying in Ottawa for at least the next four years.

Methot, who plays on the top defensive pairing with captain Erik Karlsson, signed a four year deal worth $4.9 million US per season.  The deal also includes no trade clause list of 10 teams.

This has been a long-awaited signing by the Senators.  Contract talks were delayed because Methot has been marred by injuries this season, missing training camp, the Senators preseason and has been limited to just 17 games in 2014-2015.

There was also some publicized dissension between Methot’s camp and Senators management during early negotiations.  Methot’s former agent revealed some of the contract terms after general manager Bryan Murray told Bob McKenzie of TSN that he would rather trade Methot than lose him to free agency.

Still, the Ottawa native was looking to remain a Senator and admitted to leaving some money on the table  in order to do so:

“That was a commitment that I was willing to make to play here,” Methot told reporters. “To me it’s a privilege to play in Ottawa and play in front of my family and friends, so that was a little sacrifice I was willing to make to stick around.”

With the trade deadline just a couple of weeks away, Murray sounded confident in keeping an important piece of his roster:

“He’s a very valuable guy,” Murray said. “He can skate, he’s a big rangy guy, he can get back and get loose pucks. When Erik takes the offensive game to the net in the opposite zone, Marc is able to get back because of his skating ability.”

Methot, who was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Nick Foligno is in his third season with the Senators.  He has 8 points in 17 games this season and ranks 2nd in plus/minus with +8.

The Senators are currently 9 points behind the Boston Bruins who hold the 2nd and final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Senators host the Montreal Canadiens at the Canadian Tire Centre on Wednesday and the Florida Panthers visit on Saturday.
