With a quarter of the NHL season pretty much complete, attention turns to the second quarter and, of course, the fast approaching trade deadline. Set for April 3rd of this year, things are only beginning to heat up. Never before has the league had a trade deadline expire in April. And never before have fans had so much time to wonder what might be done between now and then. Given how short a season there is this year, the late deadline seems to have left the door wide open for bigger swaps than we have seen in the past few years. Add to that the ability to add salary into the trade mix and you’ve got a recipe for an exciting month of March in the NHL. What makes things even more interesting is the fact that with such a short season, injuries are sure to happen – and they already are. With Ottawa losing Erik Karlsson for the year, not to mention Jason Spezza and Jared Cowen (among many other injured in Ottawa), the Senators lead a growing list of teams that are seeing the odds go against them thus far. With a great start under their belt, you have to wonder if Ottawa might be the team to jump start an edgy and exciting trade season.
